About Sydney

Commonly mistaken for the capital, Sydney is the most populous city in Australia with an estimated population of 5,312,163 people (as of June 2019). Sydney is the state capital of New South Wales and holds around 65% of that state’s population with over 2,500,000 acres of nature reserves and parks. The inner city of Sydney covers 25 square kilometres with the Tasman Sea to the east and the stunning Blue Mountains to the west. The Greater Sydney region spans 12,367 square kilometres and is split into two very contrasting geographical areas; the south and west of the Harbour is made up of the relatively flat Cumberland Plain whilst the north is full of steep valleys that make up the Hornsby Plateau.

Sydney Tours

Perhaps the most popular day trip out of Sydney is an adventure in the Blue Mountains, the protected National Park spans 2,690 square kilometres and can be found approximately 80 kilometres west of Sydney. An enormous eucalypt forest covers the 470-million-year-old mountains, some believe this to be the cause of the majestic blue haze surrounding the peaks, giving the mountains their name, scientists insist the optical phenomenon called the Rayleigh Scattering is to blame. This UNESCO World Heritage Site boasts over 140 kilometres of walking trails, some offering a leisurely stroll along a well-paved path, whilst others offer challenging scrambles across week-long treks!

If you’re looking for a more laid-back day-out, Australia’s oldest and best-known wine region is also on Sydney’s doorstep. The Hunter Valley has been producing world-class wine since the 1800s and offers fine dining restaurants where you can also sample the cheese, olive oil and olives produced in the region.
