About The Great Ocean Road
Most people have heard of Australia’s most famous road trip, but did you know that this National Heritage-listed 243km stretch of beautiful coastline is in fact the world’s largest war memorial? Constructed by returning soldiers from the First World War to commemorate their fallen comrades.
The journey begins at the seaside town of Torquay, home to the world-famous Bells Beach and the birthplace of Australia’s most famous surf brands. The memorial then finishes at the largest city along the road, Warrnambool which is a great place to enjoy a picnic on their sheltered beaches and at the right time of year, catch the juvenile southern right whales frolicking in the waves.
The journey takes you along the Surf and Shipwreck Coast, amazing tourists with the multitude of picturesque scenes as you travel through rainforests and along sheer cliff edges. The road is jam-packed with well-advertised tourist stops and the sparsely populated Victorian coastline has encouraged a wide selection of wildlife to flourish such as wombats, koalas, kangaroos, and platypus.
