Dingo sightings are common along beaches, walking tracks and campsites, and understanding how to coexist responsibly is an essential part of visiting K’gari.

Lake McKenzie
Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) on K’gari is one of the island’s most recognisable natural features. It is a perched lake that holds only rainwater filtered through pure silica sand. This creates its bright blue water and soft white shoreline, making it a popular spot for swimming and photography. Most K'gari tours visit Lake McKenzie, as it's often considered the most beautiful place on the entire island.

Eli Creek
Eli Creek is one of the most visited spots on K'gari (Fraser Island). Often described as a natural “lazy river”, Eli Creek has clear, cool water that flows steadily out to 75 Mile Beach. The creek is accessible via a short boardwalk that winds through lush vegetation. Make it a refreshing stop during your 4WD trip by packing some floaties and kicking back as you float down Eli Creek in style!

Champagne Pools
The Champagne Pools are a group of natural rock pools on the northeastern coast of K’gari (Fraser Island), where incoming waves spill over the rocks and create a bubbling, champagne-like effect. Situated on 75 Mile Beach between Indian Head and Waddy Point, they are one of the island’s few safe saltwater swimming spots. Book a multiday tour to visit the Champagne Pools, as many day trips don't travel this far.

Maheno Shipwreck
The Maheno Shipwreck is one of K’gari’s most recognisable landmarks, resting along 75 Mile Beach on the island’s eastern coast. In 1935, while being towed to Japan for scrap, it was caught in a cyclone and washed ashore, where it has remained ever since. Today, the rusting hull is a popular photo stop and a reminder of the island’s maritime history. Get your iconic photo in front of the famous shipwreck!

75 Mile Beach
Covering the Eastern shore of K'gari (Fraser Island), 75 Mile Beach is the ultimate spot for a 4WD beach adventure. Whether you are on a tag along tour or hiring your own 4WD, nothing beats gliding along these golden sands, especially at sunrise! Keep your eyes peeled for dingos and make sure you follow all the standard road rules of Queensland (it is a sand highway)!

FAQ

The best way to explore K’gari Island is on a guided 4WD adventure from Rainbow Beach or Hervey Bay. Peterpans partners with top local operators offering 2 and 3 day tours that include camping, lakes, and beach drives. No permits or vehicle hire needed. This means you’ll get to explore all the highlights like Eli Creek, Maheno Shipwreck & Champagne Pools with other travellers.

Yes! If you want to try driving a 4WD on K’gari without hiring your own vehicle, you can join a tag-along tour. These include a lead vehicle, which the tour guide drives, followed by other vehicles which guests can drive if that want. You don’t have to drive though!

Guided tours include ferry transfers, 4WD transport, national park fees, meals, and accommodation (camping or lodges). Most also visit Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, Central Station and the Maheno Shipwreck, though itineraries can vary.

Two full days on K’gari is enough to tick off the island’s highlights like Lake McKenzie, Eli Creek, the Maheno Shipwreck, and the 75 Mile Beach Highway. If you can stretch it to three days, you’ll have time to slow down, explore lesser-visited spots such as Lake Wabby or Champagne Pools, and enjoy relaxed beach drives without rushing between stops. Many Peterpans travellers choose the 3-day tour option for the perfect balance of adventure and chill time.

It is generally great visiting K’gari throughout the entire year however each season brings different highlights. Spring (September – November) provides lovely warm days and the bonus of fewer crowds. Summer time (December – February) is when the weather is the hottest and is perfect for swimming but be aware the tropical climate might bring showers. As Autumn (March – May) arrives temperatures drop again along with the crowds making it another ideal time to plan your trip. Winter (June – August) is cooler weather, but still comfortable with the added bonus of whale watching in Hervey Bay.

You can, however you MUST have a 4WD vehicle. If you don’t own one, you will need to hire. You’ll also have to pay for ferries, national park permits, fuel, food, and accommodation. Self-drive is great for adventurous travellers, but it’s quite costly and requires a lot of planning. Chat with our team to enquire about this type of trip and we can advise the best options!

K’gari is the original name given to the island by the Butchulla Aboriginal People. European colonists who invaded the island renamed it to Fraser Island, but the Queensland Government recently reverted the name back to K’gari out of respect for the Traditional Owners.
