Uluru is in the heart of Australia’s Red Centre, inside Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park, about 450 km southwest of Alice Springs.
You can drive in yourself, but guided tours from Alice Springs or Yulara offer a richer experience combining cultural insights and access to the best sunrise and sunset spots. If you fly into Alice Springs, its a 5 hour drive to Uluru. Peterpans offers day and multi-day options including exploring Kings Canyon and Kata Tjuta depending on your time and budget.
Climbing Uluru is permanently closed out of respect for its cultural significance to the Anangu Traditional Owners. You can walk around Uluru and explore the waterholes and sites located around the base.
May–October (the dry, cooler season) offers the most comfortable temperatures and is the best time to visit. In summer (Dec–Feb) you could experience sweltering heat – and alot of flies!
Most travellers stay 3–4 days around Uluru. This gives you enough time to fully explore Uluru and see it at sunrise or sunset, plus visit nearby places like Kata Tjuta or Kings Canyon. These highlights are also a few hours drive from Alice Springs, so take travel time into account as well.
You do need a Uluru–Kata Tjuta National Park Pass to visit. But if you are booked on a guided tour, these are normally included. If you are road-tripping or visiting independently, it’s up to you to book your park pass!
You can fly into either Alice Springs or Yulara (Ayers Rock Airport). Both locations have guided tours with transport that visit Uluru and the Red Centre. Yulara is much closer to Uluru, so flying into here means you will have less driving time.
