There’s a moment on every Outback drive where the last town disappears from the mirror and the country opens into something so big it resets your sense of scale. That’s what you’re going for.

Plan Your Route (and Tell Someone)

A map of Australia showing all of the main tourist attractions

Inland, your route dictates your fuel stops, your water carry, and your safety margin. Lock the skeleton of the route before you leave.

BEFORE YOU LEAVE

  • check

Map fuel stops and distances - assume some remote roadhouses are shut.

  • check

Download offline maps - the whole region, not just your route.

  • check

Share your itinerary + check-in schedule - with someone who'll notice.

2

2WD or 4WD?

The single most common Outback planning mistake: booking a 2WD camper then building a route full of dirt.

🚐 2WD is fine for:

  • circle Stuart Highway to Uluru
  • circle Kings Canyon (sealed)
  • circle Outback QLD towns

🛻 You'll want 4WD for:

  • circle Mereenie Loop
  • circle Oodnadatta & Birdsville Tracks
  • circle Any "unsealed: not permitted" road

Dunc’s tip: Read your rental agreement’s unsealed-road clause before you book, not after you bog it.

THE RULES THAT KEEP YOU SHINY-SIDE UP

  • error

Don't drive at dawn, dusk or night - that's when roos own the road

  • error

Respect road trains - up to 53.5m long
