Cape Tribulation
Cape Tribulation is a small coastal spot in Queensland with a pretty wild claim to fame. It’s the only place on Earth where the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef literally meet. The area is packed with biodiversity, ancient landscapes and the kind of “how is this real” scenery that makes you pause mid-stride. Captain Cook named it back in 1770 after struggling to navigate the tricky coastline, and you can still feel that raw, untouched energy today. Visitors come for rainforest walks, croc-spotting cruises, freshwater swimming holes and stays tucked deep in the jungle or right by the beach.

Daintree rainforest
The Daintree Rainforest feels like stepping into another universe, just with better humidity and way more cassowary warnings. It’s the oldest rainforest on Earth and you can feel it the second you roll in. Ancient trees, hidden creeks, mossy boardwalks and beaches where the rainforest literally meets the reef. In the stunning Daintree National Park, the rainforest meets the sea at Cape Tribulation and branches out into an ancient, tropical wonderland.

Travel Questions

Cairns has everything in one place, world-class reef access, ancient rainforests, tropical islands, and thrill-seeking experiences. Whether you’re diving with turtles, zip-lining through the Daintree, or skydiving over the ocean, it’s impossible to get bored here.

Dive or snorkel the Great Barrier Reef, take the Skyrail to Kuranda, chase waterfalls at Millaa Millaa and Josephine Falls, or raft the mighty Tully River. Don’t miss a trip to Cape Tribulation where the reef meets the rainforest.

Absolutely. Cairns is one of Australia’s most social backpacker hubs. You’ll find lively hostels, rooftop bars, budget reef trips, and endless group tours that make meeting new mates easy. The city’s compact layout means you can walk from the lagoon to the bar to your hostel without ever calling an Uber.

Four to five days is perfect to explore the reef, rainforest, and a waterfall or two. Add extra nights if you want to fit in adrenaline activities or relax on nearby Fitzroy or Green Island.

May to October is prime time, dry season means warm days, calm seas, and top-notch snorkelling visibility. The wet season (November to April) brings tropical showers, lush rainforests, and fewer crowds, perfect if you don’t mind a bit of adventure rain.

You sure can! Most travellers base themselves in Cairns and book reef day tours one day and rainforest tours the next. You can snorkel coral gardens one morning, then spot crocodiles on the Daintree River the following day. Peterpans can help you bundle the best experiences for your time and budget.
